Design Philosophy

Craft · February 4, 2015

Just some thought today around the simplicity required to communicate effectively across cultures and languages.

In some instances we are asked to focus our design toward limited audiences each with a rather refined set of design requirements. It is important to hit the mark for your audiences, but consider the people that are left behind. Are there subtle changes that we can make to accommodate a wider range of audiences by using some simple communication techniques.

  • Keep it simple: Your symbol may need be reproduced at small scale and in poorly lit environments.
  • Avoid written language: Even if your user is literate, it may not be in your selected language.
  • Avoid reliance on culture: A good symbol shouldn’t rely heavily on previous knowledge, stories or special learning to work.

Although the above was intended for icon design, it has application to every other media and message. These simple principles might just be a great start to build a foundation of design thinking.
