When Things Go Wrong

Teams · Career · July 1, 2015

Things will go wrong at some point. On a project, in an interview, your first job, etc. The amount of time your spend being wrong depends on you.

SHIT HAPPENS, MOST OF US JUST CHOOSE NOT TO ACKNOWLEDGE IT

We are wired to always present the best aspects of ourselves, consider it a good offense. Focus on the attendance, grades, internships, volunteering, mentorship, etc. Socially we boast our career, wedding, vacations, house and kids as a adults. We spend time plotting on how to mask our own inexperience or shortcomings while promoting the positives. We are compelled to spin a great story. Go on the offense, never seeing weakness or average, only strengths.

SHOULD WE BE NEGATIVE?

No. But rarely do we investigate our shortcomings, our mistakes, and our failures. Culture fixed on perpetual forward movement. Think about the last time you invited someone in with negative energy or a sad sob story. We shun others and bury all shortcomings. This doesn’t give us adequate time to reflect and perhaps, adjust course.

We miss the special opportunity to explore in our weaknesses. Bathe in our experiences and actually grow. How do we expect to learn if we do not take the time to discuss and reflect on things? Especially if they happen to be a few negatives. Many of us have no defense because we have only built our offences. We need to grab those moments of reflection, carve them out of your day. This will help build us in real ways that will provide real strength.
