I had an interesting conversation with a small business owner today. He thinks he is perfectly positioned to provide valued services to his clients for the next several years, maybe he even thinks he’s in at the ground level on a long life of security.
I talked, he wasn’t listening to me. All he heard was “change” and he stopped listening, creating a solid defense to insulate him from acknowledging any possible weakness in his business approach.
What I was trying to explain and he doesn’t realize is that this “change” is inevitable. The way forward is to act in everyone's best interest. Fight for your client, not just yourself. His business model is based on tight control over the hidden system of servers, empty promises of social and general system admin control.
As a business owner it should be clear. You should know the answers to any technical discussions around ownership and location of your digital accounts and hosting/systems management . Do you know your options and what direction your digital future is headed? If not I advise you to get a handle on your options. Even if you’re not prepared to make a change you know what’s possible. If you’re operating in the shadows or have someone in there for you, you’re probably being taken advantage of and at risk to lose.
And for those businesses that are operating in the shadows, your business is in jeopardy from any trailblazer who walks into your vertical. It’s not because they are going to make money. It’s because they are going to earn trust through truth. All they have to do is shine a flash light at your deception or greed and it will be clear how to move forward. People hate to be cheated. If you are cheating anyone you’re in jeopardy.
