Following Wile E Coyote
Think for yourself. Hopefully you’re in a situation that allows you to fail and grow. An opportunity to build you our process is something that usually never comes up in an interview. Most people are without a process and tend to follow. I don’t want to follow, people can choose to follow me.
That rant is the primer for a greater conversation around the way we perceive the world and in turn offer our advice. Consider the following:
Help me lower my bounce rate and keep people on my site.

SEO: We need to create better descriptions and use more keywords throughout the site.
STRATEGIST: We can make custom landing pages to better align with each audience and their needs.
IA/UX: We need to restructure the site and the content to align better with the site goals.
DESIGNER: We need to change the CTAs and their prominence on the page.
COPY: We should make the language more engaging.
PHOTOGRAPHY: We need to tell a story and capture the user emotionally.
FRONT-END DEV: We need to make the website responsive and more modern.
MARKETING: Can we add some sharable content that would draw people in?
Everyone has an answer that is specific to how they perceive a project, and what is in their power to change. That’s fine, but most people will never ask WHY? Why do we need to lower the bounce rate? What is the site for? Who is the site for? Why do they visit the site? What page/link are they coming from?
All too often we jump into solutioning and forget to step back and look at the problem. We do it because clients want quick change, not always long lasting change. We do it because we are afraid of our billable hour. We fear the perception of “think time”. People come to us for solutions, not to pay for ideas.
We end up apart of the problem.
Real World EXAMPLE:
Recently I was picking up a prescription at a large pharmacy chain. I have been receiving my automated phone calls telling me that it’s that time for a refill. So I’m in the drive-thru and talk to the tech.
The tech doesn’t have anything ready for me. “I don’t see anything.” We start the conversation about when I had it, what was last filled. It’s odd. She says that I need to request a refill and that it will take 25 minutes.
I see the App Promo in the corner of the window and see I can request that refill from my phone. The tech says that I could also call it in. Then she asks if I want the system to AUTOMATICALLY refill my prescription. UMM. Yup!
These questions race through my head?
- Why didn’t they ask me about automatic refills the first time I shopped there?
- Why the fuck, did they build an app to do that if I could call?
- How much money did they spend on that dumb app?
- Who was such an ass to allow the app to happen?
- How many Pharmacy Techs could they have hired with that money?
- Why didn’t someone investigate the process?
I now see opportunity. Can you create a consultancy that asks the right/tough questions to drive real and satisfying change?
