Lately as I have considered rebuilding two personal projects I am confronted with the question of technology framework and my strategic design approach. Mobile was a big consideration, but I never fully baked a mobile strategic approach.

While in the website rebuild process I’ve held onto this link in my email inbox because this idea resonated with me:

The Curse of a Mobile Strategy - The words may be different but the mantra is the same. Design for experience, but not the device.

While on a client call, I picked up on a disappointed with the mobile options available in their chosen platform. I think this was more of a subconscious psychological reaction to their company ethos rather than a reaction to the usefulness and function of the chosen platform in accommodating their mobile use cases. Considering that for some people it’s a checkbox that they believe represents a fully consider experience. The client team audibly communicated their disappointment because it didn’t live up to their beliefs about mobile and generic universal mobile use cases.

If they could sideline their initial reaction they would have understood the full power of the platform is not realized in the mobile web browser. The app is a more appropriate use of the tool and is available. Redirecting their proceeding comments to this end would have helped them ask better questions about how to bet leverage this platform to support their actual mobile use cases.
